BA Film & Television Studies/English Literature
About this course
Film and television studies combined with English literature is a pairing that explores two of the most powerful forms of storytelling that human beings have developed. Literature asks how written language creates meaning, builds characters, constructs worlds, and addresses the fundamental questions of human experience. Film and television studies brings similar analytical tools to moving images, examining how directors, writers, cinematographers, and editors work together to produce the stories that shape popular culture and artistic expression. At Aberystwyth University, which has a long tradition in both film and literary studies, this three-year full-time degree develops your ability to read carefully, argue precisely, and engage critically with texts and films from a wide range of periods and traditions. You will study canonical works of literature alongside significant films and television series, and you will engage with the theoretical frameworks that scholars bring to both disciplines, including narrative theory, cultural studies, gender theory, and auteur criticism. Aberystwyth's bilingual campus and its location in Wales also mean that Welsh-language film and literary culture are part of the intellectual environment in which you study. Graduates of film, television, and English literature programmes move into a wide range of careers. Many work in publishing, editing, journalism, and broadcasting. Others find careers in film and television production, criticism, and cultural programming. The writing, analytical, and communication skills developed are valued in public relations, marketing, education, and the public sector. Some graduates go on to practise as writers, critics, or screenwriters. Postgraduate study in English literature, film studies, cultural theory, or creative writing is a well-trodden route for those who want to pursue academic or specialist creative careers.
