BA Film and Television Studies and Media and Communications
About this course
Film and television studies, taken alongside media and communications, gives you two complementary frameworks for understanding how moving-image culture shapes and reflects the world we live in. Film studies brings the tools of close textual analysis, genre theory, auteur criticism and film history to bear on cinema and television as art forms. Media and communications broadens the lens to encompass the industries, institutions, audiences and digital platforms through which media circulates and has its effects. Together, they produce graduates who can both interpret screen culture and understand the systems that produce and distribute it. At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most practically and internationally enriched programmes of its kind. You will develop skills in critical analysis and academic writing, studying everything from classical Hollywood to international art cinema, documentary traditions, television drama and the evolving landscape of streaming and social media. The media and communications strand introduces you to theories of audience, journalism, public relations, political communication and the digital transformation of the media industries. The work placement gives you direct professional experience in a media or communications context, and the year abroad places your studies in an international setting. A typical tariff of around 136 points is expected. Graduates move into careers in television production, film and media journalism, public relations, advertising, digital content creation, broadcasting, cultural policy and media research. The analytical skills the degree develops are also valued in the civil service, education and the wider creative industries. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in film, media, cultural studies or journalism, while others use the practical experience gained through placements to move directly into production or communications roles.
