BA Film and Screen Arts
About this course
Film and screen arts is a practical filmmaking discipline that develops your ability to design and create stories for the screen, combining the craft of cinematography, direction and editing with an understanding of the aesthetics, history and contexts of contemporary cinema. It is a programme for those who want to make films, not just study them, developing the technical and creative capabilities to work in the full range of film and screen content production, from narrative fiction and documentary to experimental work and emerging digital formats. At Arts University Plymouth this three-year, full-time programme focuses on cinematic storytelling and the craft of contemporary filmmaking, allowing you to design and create story-worlds for a range of audiences. You will develop skills across all the major roles of film production, from screenwriting, directing and cinematography through to sound design, editing and post-production, building a body of work that demonstrates your range and your developing voice as a filmmaker. The programme provides real insight into the global filmmaking industries, engaging with professional practice, industry contexts and the creative and business realities of making and distributing film and screen content. It includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct experience in professional screen production environments before graduation. Graduates pursue careers as directors, producers, screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, production managers, documentary makers and content creators across film, television, streaming, music video, advertising and digital media. Plymouth's creative arts tradition and strong industry connections provide a rich professional environment in which to develop your filmmaking practice. Many graduates build portfolio careers combining several of these roles, and some continue to postgraduate study in film, screenwriting or related fields.
