About this course

Film and media studies is a discipline at the intersection of creative practice and critical understanding. Film has been one of the dominant art forms and cultural forces of the past century, and the broader media landscape in which it now sits, spanning streaming platforms, social media, digital video and interactive content, continues to evolve rapidly. Studying the field means developing both the ability to make work and the analytical tools to understand what you are making and why it matters. At Robert Gordon University's Gray's School of Art, this four-year full-time programme blends creative filmmaking practice with critical analysis of media, culture and technology. You will work from concept through to post-production, gaining hands-on experience with the tools and processes of contemporary screen production while also engaging with the cultural, historical and technological forces that shape what media is and how it functions. A year abroad is included in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study film and media in a different national context and broaden your perspective on how the screen industries operate internationally. The combination of practical skills and critical thinking that the programme develops is genuinely useful in a sector that values people who can both make and think. You will develop skills in camera work, editing, sound design, scriptwriting and production management, alongside the ability to analyse media texts, understand industry structures and engage with film and media theory. Graduates move into careers across the screen industries, including roles in production, post-production, documentary, broadcast journalism, digital content creation, and film and media education. Some graduates move into arts and cultural organisations, media management, or develop independent creative practices. Further study in film, media or creative practice is an option for those who want to specialise.
