BA Film and Media
About this course
Film and media studies is the critical and analytical examination of two of the most pervasive cultural forces of the modern world. Cinema, television, journalism, social media and digital platforms shape how people understand politics, identity, history and society, and the tools to analyse them critically are increasingly important. Film studies brings close attention to the visual and narrative language of moving images; media studies broadens this to encompass the institutions, industries, technologies and audiences that produce and consume all forms of media. Together they provide a rigorous framework for understanding contemporary culture. At Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, you will develop the skills to read films and media texts analytically, to understand the industries that produce them and the social contexts that shape their meanings. The programme runs for four years full time, which gives you time to build both theoretical depth and practical critical skills. You will engage with film history, genre, narrative, representation and spectatorship alongside the broader landscape of media production, regulation and consumption. QMU's setting in Edinburgh, a city with a strong film festival tradition and an active arts and media scene, provides a stimulating environment for this kind of study. The typical entry tariff for this programme is 168 points. Film and media graduates develop analytical thinking, research skills, cultural awareness and the ability to produce clear, persuasive written and verbal argument. These capabilities transfer into a wide range of careers. Graduates work in film and television production, journalism, public relations, marketing, digital content, broadcasting, arts administration, education, policy and the creative industries more broadly. Postgraduate study in film studies, media and communications, journalism, cultural studies or creative practice is also a well-established route for those wishing to develop academic expertise or practical skills further.
