BA Fashion Textiles: Print
About this course
Fashion textiles with a specialism in print is a discipline concerned with the creation of surface design for fabric, exploring how colour, pattern and texture can transform cloth and communicate ideas, cultural references and aesthetic sensibilities. Print processes, from screen printing and digital printing to resist techniques and transfer methods, give designers a rich vocabulary for creating textiles that are both technically accomplished and visually distinctive. Fashion textiles in print sits at the intersection of fashion, art, craft and design, producing practitioners who work across clothing, homeware, accessories and the wider textile industry. At UAL, this three-year full-time programme develops your skills in print-based textile design within one of the world's leading creative university environments. You will work with a range of print processes and techniques, developing your personal aesthetic and your ability to respond to briefs, research and context. The programme engages with the cultural, historical and conceptual dimensions of textile design as well as the technical, encouraging you to develop work that has both visual impact and conceptual depth. UAL's location in London gives you access to the global fashion and textile industry, to galleries and archives, and to a creative community that spans every discipline. You will build a portfolio of textile and print work across the three years that demonstrates your creative development and technical range. This portfolio is central to your professional identity as a designer. Graduates work as textile designers, print designers, surface pattern designers and creative directors across fashion, homeware, interiors, sportswear, accessories and the wider textile industry. Some graduates develop freelance practices or move into styling, art direction or textile-related roles in the retail and fashion industries.
