About this course

European studies is the interdisciplinary examination of Europe as a political, economic, cultural and historical entity, and of the complex set of institutions, relationships and tensions that define the continent's present. It draws on political science, international relations, history, economics, sociology and cultural analysis to build a rounded understanding of how modern Europe works, why it takes the form it does, and what challenges it faces. Spanish, combined with it, gives you direct linguistic access to one of Europe's most important cultures and to the wider Spanish-speaking world beyond the continent. At the University of Essex you will study this four-year programme, developing both your understanding of European politics, history and institutions and your proficiency in Spanish. The degree engages with the geo-political importance of Europe at a time when the future of European integration, the continent's relationship with neighbouring regions, and the pressures of migration, inequality and democratic backsliding are live and urgent questions. Spanish gives you a stake in both the European dimension, Spain is central to debates about Eurozone economics, regional autonomy and migration, and the Latin American world that connects to those debates through language and historical relationship. Graduates of European studies with Spanish are well placed for careers in European and international organisations, diplomacy and the foreign service, policy research and think tanks, international business, journalism and broadcasting, translation and cultural roles, and the charity and NGO sectors working in European or Latin American contexts. The combination of analytical training in political and social science with genuine linguistic competence is valued wherever organisations need people who can navigate complex international environments. Postgraduate study in European studies, international relations, Spanish, or public policy is a natural extension for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
