BA European Studies and Modern Languages
About this course
European studies and modern languages is a degree that takes the geopolitical and cultural phenomenon of Europe seriously, combining analytical engagement with European institutions, history, and politics with the practical ability to communicate in a European language. Europe is one of the most consequential and complex regions in contemporary global affairs, the home of one of the world's largest economic blocs, the site of ongoing debates about sovereignty, identity, and democratic governance, and a region whose future matters enormously to the rest of the world. Understanding it requires both disciplinary rigour and linguistic access. At the University of Essex, this four-year full-time programme gives you the opportunity to develop genuine competence in a modern European language alongside a critical understanding of the political, economic, historical, and cultural dimensions of contemporary Europe. You will study the major institutions of European integration, the political systems of European states, the history of European cooperation and conflict, and the cultural traditions that have shaped European identities. The language component develops your written and spoken ability to a high standard, giving you direct access to European discourse, media, and scholarship in the language you study. Essex has a strong research tradition in European politics and international relations, providing an intellectually stimulating context for the degree. Graduates are well-placed for careers in European institutions, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, business, education, and the charity sector. The combination of European political and cultural knowledge with language competence is particularly valuable in organisations that engage with European policy, regulation, or markets. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in European studies, political science, international relations, or area studies, and some pursue careers in research or academic institutions.
