Ethics, value, and philosophy is a programme that asks the deepest questions about how we should live, what we owe to each other, and how we can know what is right. Ethics is the branch of philosophy concerned with morality, examining the foundations of moral judgement, the nature of rights and obligations, and how we should act in a world of competing interests and values. Value theory extends this into questions about what matters, how we should measure and compare different goods, and what the relationship is between objective values and subjective preferences. Philosophy provides the broader framework of reasoning, argumentation, and conceptual analysis within which these questions are pursued. At the University of Reading, this four-year programme includes placement experience, which distinguishes it from most philosophy degrees in the UK. The placement element gives you the opportunity to engage with a professional or organisational context where ethical reasoning and practical judgement are relevant, whether in healthcare, business, public policy, the law, or the voluntary sector.
