Equine performance science applies the principles of exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and sports science to horses, asking how equine athletes can perform at their best and how their health and welfare can be protected and promoted. It is a discipline that sits between veterinary science, sport and exercise science, and equine management, drawing on all of them to develop a rigorous, evidence-based approach to the performance, training, and care of horses across a range of disciplines from racing and eventing to dressage and showjumping. At Anglia Ruskin University, this programme is offered on a part-time basis, making it particularly suitable for people who are already working in the equine industry, whether as grooms, trainers, riders, or stable managers, and who want to deepen their scientific understanding alongside their practical experience. You will study equine anatomy and physiology in depth, developing an understanding of how the horse's musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and metabolic systems respond to training and competition. Biomechanics introduces the principles of movement analysis, and nutrition science addresses how diet affects performance, recovery, and long-term health.
