BSc Environmental Science with Foundation Year
About this course
Environmental science brings together the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities to understand the systems that sustain life on Earth and the ways in which human activity is changing them. It is an inherently interdisciplinary subject, drawing on biology, chemistry, geography, geology, economics, and policy analysis to address questions about climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource use, and the possibilities for more sustainable ways of organising human societies. The urgency of these questions makes environmental science one of the most significant intellectual projects of the present moment. At Birkbeck this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing additional preparation before you begin the main degree. Across the programme you will develop a grounded scientific understanding of the causes and environmental impacts of climate change, examining how the atmosphere, oceans, land systems, and biosphere interact and how human activities are altering them. Alongside this scientific core, the programme develops your communication skills, creative capacities, and cultural understanding, equipping you to participate effectively in climate debates that require both technical knowledge and the ability to engage diverse audiences. You will build a professional network and develop the environmental, emotional, and cultural awareness needed to advocate effectively for change, combining analytical rigour with the kind of empathy and communication capability that environmental challenges genuinely require. Graduates in environmental science find roles across a rapidly growing range of sectors. Environmental consultancy, sustainability management in business and public bodies, policy analysis, science communication, journalism, and roles in non-governmental organisations working on climate and conservation are all accessible from this foundation. The combination of scientific understanding and communication skills is particularly valued by employers seeking people who can translate complex environmental evidence into action. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in environmental science, sustainability, climate policy, or related fields, contributing directly to the research and advocacy that these challenges demand.
