BSc Environmental Management
About this course
Environmental management addresses one of the defining challenges of the present century: how human societies can meet their needs for resources, energy and economic development without irreversibly degrading the natural systems on which all life depends. It is an applied discipline that draws on ecology, geography, economics, policy studies and the natural sciences to develop practical frameworks for assessing environmental impacts, managing natural resources and designing strategies that balance human activity with environmental protection. As climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity become ever more pressing, the demand for graduates who can think and act across this complex field is growing rapidly. At the University of Brighton this programme prepares you to tackle global environmental challenges through a curriculum that covers environmental impact assessment, ecosystem management, climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable development policy and the regulatory frameworks that govern environmental practice in the UK and internationally. The course includes a sandwich year and work-placement experience, giving you a structured period of professional practice during your studies and the opportunity to apply your knowledge in real environmental management settings, from consultancy and government agencies to conservation organisations. The programme runs full time over three years. You will develop skills in environmental assessment methods, data analysis, policy evaluation, project management and professional communication. The ability to integrate scientific understanding with strategic and policy thinking is central to environmental management, and the degree is designed to develop this integration. Graduates move into careers in environmental consultancy, local and national government, conservation organisations, the energy sector, planning, sustainability management and environmental education. The field is growing as organisations in every sector face increasing pressure to understand and reduce their environmental impacts. Postgraduate study in environmental management, environmental science or sustainability is also a natural route.
