BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability
About this course
Environmental management and sustainability is a discipline that applies scientific, economic and social analysis to the challenge of managing natural resources and ecosystems in ways that are viable over the long term. The world faces interconnected crises of biodiversity loss, climate change, soil degradation, water scarcity and threats to food and energy security, and addressing these requires practitioners who can understand both the ecological processes involved and the human systems, economic, political, institutional, that shape how land, water and energy are used. At Harper Adams University, which has a long tradition of excellence in agriculture and environmental science, this four-year, full-time programme develops your understanding of environmental science alongside the practical management skills needed to work effectively in rural, agricultural and natural resource settings. You will study ecology, soil science, hydrology, climate science, environmental law and policy, sustainability frameworks and the management of habitats, biodiversity and natural resources. The programme also addresses food systems and the connections between agricultural land use, ecosystem services and broader sustainability goals. Harper Adams's rural campus in Shropshire provides a distinctive setting in which to learn about land management and the practical dimensions of sustainable development. Graduates pursue careers in environmental consultancy, conservation management, countryside management, local and national government environmental agencies, rural estate management, sustainable land use planning, the forestry sector, the agri-environment industry, water companies and the growing field of natural capital assessment. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in environmental management, conservation science, sustainable agriculture or related fields, developing deeper expertise in the specific area of practice that most interests them.
