BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability
About this course
Environmental management and sustainability addresses one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century: how human societies can meet their needs without destroying the natural systems on which they depend. It is an applied discipline that draws on ecology, geography, economics, social science, and policy studies to understand environmental problems and develop practical responses. The sustainability dimension adds a focus on long-term thinking, asking not just how current damage can be limited but how organisations, communities, and economies can be transformed to operate within ecological limits. This four-year full-time programme at Abertay University in Dundee includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study or work in an environmental context outside the UK and develop a genuinely international perspective on sustainability challenges. Abertay has a strong focus on applied learning and industry engagement, and the programme reflects this: you will study environmental science, land use and planning, pollution management, environmental law and policy, sustainability strategy, and the tools of environmental impact assessment and management. Field and project work are integral to the curriculum, giving you practical experience of working with real environmental challenges. Graduates from this programme pursue careers in environmental consultancy, local authority planning and sustainability teams, national parks and conservation bodies, NGOs, government environmental agencies, and the sustainability functions of large organisations in the private sector. Roles include environmental consultant, sustainability manager, environmental officer, planning consultant, and project coordinator. The combination of technical knowledge and policy awareness is particularly valued by employers in roles that span science and decision-making. Postgraduate options include master's degrees in environmental management, sustainability, planning, and related fields, and the programme provides a strong foundation for these routes.
