About this course

Environmental geoscience sits at the intersection of the earth sciences and the urgent challenges of the present moment. It examines how natural geological processes and human activity interact to shape the environment, and it asks how that understanding can be used to work toward a more sustainable future. From climate change and water resources to pollution, landscape degradation, and natural hazards, the discipline applies geological and environmental knowledge to problems that are among the most consequential of our time. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme equips you to use your understanding of the Earth system to tackle real-world socio-environmental problems. You will study the geological and environmental processes that govern the movement of water, the cycling of carbon, the behaviour of soils and sediments, and the dynamics of landscapes over time, developing both theoretical understanding and practical field and laboratory skills. The programme engages directly with questions of hazard assessment and management, including earthquakes, volcanic activity, flooding, and slope instability, as well as with the human dimensions of environmental change, including how communities and institutions respond to environmental risk. In your third year you will spend a year abroad, broadening your scientific and personal horizons. With a typical entry tariff of 200 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at a leading research university. Environmental geoscience graduates are well prepared for careers in geo-environmental consultancy, engineering geology, water management, environmental impact assessment, renewable energy development, hazard management, and governmental and international agencies working on environmental regulation and climate adaptation. The research and fieldwork skills developed during the degree are directly relevant to professional practice. Postgraduate study in environmental earth sciences, engineering geology, or related fields provides routes for further specialisation.
