About this course

Environmental geoscience is the study of how the Earth's physical, chemical, and biological systems interact at and near the surface, and how those interactions determine the conditions for life and the nature of the planet's environments over time. It is a discipline that takes a systems view of the Earth, examining how geology, biology, chemistry, and physics of the surface, oceans, and atmosphere are interlinked, and how human activities are altering those links in ways that have consequences for climate, ecosystems, water, and the stability of human civilisation. At the University of Bristol, this three-year programme examines the interactions between the geology, biology, chemistry, and physics of Earth's surface, oceans, and atmosphere, developing a deep understanding of Earth's environment and how it can be influenced by human activities. You will study topics including biogeochemical cycles, soil formation and function, ocean chemistry, atmospheric science, palaeoclimatology, geomorphology, and the environmental signatures of past and present change. The programme develops both theoretical understanding and practical skills in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, and the use of remote sensing and GIS. Bristol's research strength in earth and environmental science and its location in the south-west of England, with access to diverse geological and coastal environments, gives the degree a strong practical foundation. Graduates from environmental geoscience degrees pursue careers in environmental consultancy, government environmental agencies, water and waste management, renewable energy, minerals and resources, climate science, conservation, and academic research. The combination of geological and environmental understanding is particularly relevant to roles at the interface of natural and human systems. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in environmental geoscience, hydrology, climate science, or related earth sciences.
