BSc Environmental Biology
About this course
Environmental biology is the branch of life sciences concerned with how organisms interact with their environments, and with how human activity is changing those environments at local, regional, and global scales. It draws on ecology, conservation biology, genetics, and physiology to understand how populations and ecosystems function, how they respond to disturbance, and what strategies might help preserve biodiversity and ecological health in a world increasingly shaped by climate change, habitat loss, pollution, and overexploitation of natural resources. At the University of Nottingham, this three-year full-time degree offers an accessible entry route through a foundation year for candidates with a broad range of qualifications and backgrounds. The main degree develops your understanding of ecological and biological systems through both classroom and field-based learning, drawing on Nottingham's strong research tradition in environmental and life sciences and on the diverse natural environments accessible from its campuses. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and a work placement, providing extensive opportunities to gain professional experience in conservation, environmental research, or related sectors, and to develop an international perspective on environmental challenges. Graduates in environmental biology work across a wide range of sectors where ecological knowledge is needed. Conservation organisations, environmental consultancies, government agencies, nature reserves, national parks, water authorities, and international development bodies all employ environmental biologists. Fieldwork skills, taxonomic knowledge, and the ability to design and carry out ecological surveys are particularly valued in conservation and consultancy roles. For those drawn to research, the degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, or wildlife management. The typical entry tariff is 152 points.
