MEng Environmental and Civil Engineering (with a Year in Industry)
About this course
Environmental and civil engineering is the discipline concerned with designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure of modern society in ways that are both technically sound and environmentally responsible. Civil engineering covers the planning, design, and management of structures, transport networks, water systems, and foundations. Environmental engineering applies scientific and engineering principles to the protection and management of the natural environment, addressing challenges including water quality, waste management, pollution control, and the mitigation of environmental impact. Studied together, these dimensions of engineering prepare graduates to tackle the sustainability challenges that define the profession today. This five-year full-time MEng at Queen's University Belfast is taught by staff engaged in high-quality industry-linked research rooted in environmental considerations. You will develop expertise in structures, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, and project management, alongside environmental impact assessment and the skills needed to design infrastructure for a more sustainable future. The programme includes a year in industry and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional and international experience before you complete your degree. The typical entry tariff is 168 points. Environmental and civil engineering graduates are in demand across construction, consultancy, public utilities, environmental agencies, and government infrastructure bodies. As the pressures on water, energy, and land intensify, and as the need for sustainable infrastructure grows, practitioners with expertise in both civil and environmental dimensions are increasingly valuable. Many graduates pursue professional registration as chartered engineers with the Institution of Civil Engineers or Institution of Environmental Sciences. Postgraduate study in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or sustainable infrastructure is a natural continuation.
