BSc Environment and Sustainability
About this course
Environment and sustainability is a degree that addresses the most pressing challenge facing humanity: how to understand and respond to the accelerating changes in the Earth's natural systems driven by human activity, from climate change and biodiversity loss to pollution, resource depletion, and land use change. It draws on the natural sciences, social sciences, and policy studies to give you both the scientific understanding of what is happening to the environment and the social and political knowledge of why those changes are occurring and how they might be managed. At Birkbeck College, this part-time programme is led by internationally recognised researchers and offers a wealth of practical experience alongside deep theoretical understanding of what drives environmental change and how natural systems under unprecedented pressure can be managed. You will study ecology, climate science, environmental policy, sustainability science, and the economics of natural resources, developing a genuinely interdisciplinary perspective on environmental challenges. Birkbeck's distinctive commitment to accessible, research-led education means you can develop this expertise at a pace suited to your circumstances. You will develop strong research and analytical skills, the ability to evaluate evidence across natural and social scientific disciplines, and the communication capabilities needed to translate environmental understanding into professional and policy contexts. The practical dimension of the programme ensures that your learning is grounded in real environmental challenges and not purely theoretical. Graduates go on to work in environmental consultancy, conservation, sustainability management, local and national government, international development, research, and a growing range of green economy roles. The analytical and scientific skills the degree develops are valued across a wide range of organisations and sectors. Postgraduate study in environmental science, sustainability, ecology, or environmental policy is a natural next step.
