BA Entrepreneurship and Law
About this course
Entrepreneurship and law is a combination that addresses two of the most practically important disciplines for anyone interested in starting, building or working within a business venture in the modern economy. Law provides the foundational understanding of the legal system within which businesses operate: how contracts are formed and enforced, how companies are structured and governed, how intellectual property is protected, how employment relationships are regulated, and how disputes are resolved. Entrepreneurship brings the creative, commercial and strategic thinking that turns ideas into ventures, developing the ability to identify opportunities, build teams, access resources and manage the uncertainties inherent in any new enterprise. At the University of Derby this programme includes a foundation year, providing a pathway into degree-level study, and also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, which together give you the broadest possible range of formative experiences across the full programme. You will develop a thorough understanding of the English legal system alongside the practical skills and commercial mindset of an entrepreneur, engaging with both the theoretical frameworks of law and the applied realities of building businesses in a rapidly changing global environment. You will develop skills in legal analysis, commercial reasoning, business planning, negotiation, risk assessment and professional communication. The combination is particularly well suited to graduates who intend to found or join early-stage businesses, or to work in roles at the intersection of legal advice and commercial strategy. Graduates from entrepreneurship and law programmes pursue careers founding or joining ventures, in commercial legal roles, business development, management consulting, investment and finance, and in professional services firms that advise entrepreneurial clients. Postgraduate study in law, entrepreneurship or business administration is also a natural route for those seeking specialist expertise.
