About this course

English and Northern Ireland Law is a three-year LLB programme that grounds you in the legal systems of England and Wales and Northern Ireland, two jurisdictions that share the common law tradition and whose graduates can proceed towards qualifying to practise law in both territories, as well as in other common law jurisdictions including Canada and Nigeria. Common law is the legal tradition in which judicial decisions play a central role in establishing and developing the law alongside legislation, and the analytical and argumentative skills it demands are among the most transferable that any degree produces. Studying at the University of Dundee, the three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of the foundations of legal knowledge: contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional law, and the institutional structures through which law is made and applied. You will develop the skills of legal reasoning, statutory interpretation, and case analysis, and careers sessions are embedded in the course to ensure that you understand the professional landscape and the options available to you after graduation. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study law in a different jurisdiction, which broadens your comparative understanding and is particularly valuable for those interested in international legal careers or in qualifying in multiple jurisdictions. With a typical entry tariff of 120 points, the programme provides an accessible route into a professional legal education rooted in the common law tradition. Graduates who wish to practise as solicitors or barristers in England and Wales or Northern Ireland will need to complete the further professional qualifications required by those jurisdictions. Law graduates are also exceptionally well placed for a wide range of other careers, including roles in business and commerce, the civil service, financial services, journalism, academia, and the voluntary sector, where legal knowledge and analytical rigour are consistently valued.
