BA English with Foundation Year
About this course
English as an academic discipline is the study of literature and language in their full historical, cultural, and critical dimensions. It is concerned not just with reading and writing well but with understanding how texts are made, what they mean within and across different contexts, and how they participate in the shaping of culture, identity, and power. It develops your abilities as a close reader, a critical thinker, and a persuasive writer, alongside your awareness of the many different traditions and voices that make up the literature of the English language. At Keele University, this four-year full-time BA, which begins with a foundation year, allows you to develop your skills as a writer, creative thinker, and analyst of both literary and everyday language. You will explore a diverse range of literary works across cultures and historical periods, developing the analytical and communicative capacities that advanced study of English demands. As the degree progresses, you will have the opportunity to specialise in the authors, periods, genres, and approaches that engage you most, building depth alongside the breadth established in the earlier years. Placement opportunities are embedded throughout the programme, giving you practical work experience alongside your academic development and preparing you more directly for the graduate job market. The foundation year provides a supported entry into degree-level study. With a typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points, including the foundation year, the programme is accessible. English graduates are among the most adaptable and widely employed of any arts graduates. Publishing, journalism, teaching, copywriting, marketing, the civil service, law, arts administration, public relations, and the cultural industries are all well-trodden paths. The analytical and communication skills developed by an English degree are valued across almost any professional context. Postgraduate options include English literature, creative writing, publishing, journalism, and teaching, alongside research degrees for those who wish to pursue academic careers.
