BA English with Foundation Year
About this course
English at degree level is far more than the study of literature. It is a discipline that transforms how you engage with language, culture, and meaning, developing close reading skills, critical thinking, and the analytical and communicative capacities that are among the most transferable of any university subject. An English degree exposes you to the full range of written expression in the language, from medieval poetry to contemporary fiction, and situates those texts within the historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts that shaped and were shaped by them. At the University of Derby, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides an accessible entry point for students who want additional academic preparation before engaging with the main degree content. The foundation year builds the analytical and writing skills needed to engage confidently with degree-level English. The main programme is described as distinctive, integrating critical and cultural theory into the study of literature and language, and engaging with a wide range of literature from across the globe in the context of questions about identity, desire, cultural politics, and the nature of reality. The programme also offers the opportunity to study English Language alongside literature. A sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities are all available, giving you professional and international experience that extends the core academic content significantly. You will develop sophisticated reading skills, the ability to construct extended written arguments, research competence, and engagement with theory that changes how you think about texts and their contexts. Graduates from English programmes pursue careers in publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, law, writing, the cultural sector, public relations, and a wide range of other fields. The analytical and communicative skills developed are valued across many professional contexts. Postgraduate study in English, creative writing, education, or a related humanities discipline is a natural continuation.
