BA English
About this course
English as a university subject is considerably broader and more demanding than its school equivalent. It asks you to engage seriously with literature, language, and the cultural contexts that shape both, developing the capacity to read attentively, argue clearly, and write with precision and care. At its best it is a discipline that trains habits of mind that remain useful long after the specific texts have receded from memory: intellectual curiosity, tolerance of ambiguity, the ability to evaluate competing interpretations, and the skill of making a compelling case in writing. At Sussex, English study is designed to be intellectually ambitious and to challenge received ideas about what literature is and who it belongs to. You will encounter writing from a wide range of periods, cultures, and forms, developing both historical breadth and the ability to engage with contemporary critical debates. Sussex's approach encourages you to find your own voice as a critic and to bring your own perspectives to bear on the texts you study. The three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for those who need it, a year abroad and a sandwich placement year, providing both international experience and real professional exposure during the course. The work placement element gives you the opportunity to test your skills in a working environment and build your professional network. English graduates are highly employable across a wide range of sectors precisely because the skills they develop are so transferable. Careers in journalism, publishing, teaching, the civil service, public affairs, marketing, communications, law, and the creative industries are all well-trodden routes. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, journalism, or law.
