BA English
About this course
English at Cambridge is one of the most intellectually demanding literary degrees in the world, distinguished by its historical breadth, its theoretical rigour, and its commitment to close reading as both a method and a discipline. You will engage with writing in English from the earliest medieval texts through to contemporary fiction, poetry, and drama, developing the ability to read with attention and precision, to situate texts within their historical and cultural contexts, and to construct original arguments supported by careful textual analysis. This three-year, full-time programme introduces you to different types of writing, including prose fiction, drama, and poetry, before giving you increasing scope to specialise and develop your own intellectual interests within the discipline. The teaching is organised through a combination of lectures, seminars, and the distinctive Cambridge supervision system, in which you meet regularly with a specialist academic to discuss your work in depth. This intensive mode of learning develops habits of reading, thinking, and writing that graduates consistently identify as formative. You will study literature not only as art but as cultural and historical evidence, and you will engage with the critical and theoretical traditions that have shaped how we read and interpret texts. English graduates from Cambridge move into an exceptionally wide range of careers. Publishing, journalism, broadcasting, education, the law, and the civil service are among the most common destinations, and the discipline's emphasis on clear, precise, and persuasive writing is valued wherever communication matters. Many graduates also move into business, consulting, finance, and the cultural sector. The depth of intellectual formation the degree provides, and the professional network it connects you to, make Cambridge English a strong foundation for almost any ambitious career. Further postgraduate study in English, creative writing, or other humanities disciplines is a common choice for those who wish to pursue academic careers.
