BSc English & Sociology
About this course
English and sociology at Aston University is designed with clear professional purpose, connecting the study of language, literature, and communication with the systematic analysis of social structures, inequalities, and the forces that shape human experience in contemporary society. English here encompasses linguistics, literature, and language education, developing your ability to analyse how language works, how texts create meaning, and how communication operates across different contexts. Sociology brings frameworks for understanding inequality, race, health, migration, and the ways in which social structures constrain and enable individual lives. Together they build an unusually broad and practically grounded education. This four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad. You will develop analytical skills in both disciplines, learning to read texts and language phenomena carefully and rigorously alongside developing competence in social research methods and the interpretation of sociological evidence. The programme is directly informed by the research specialisms of the academic staff, spanning linguistics, literary studies, language education, inequality, racism, health, and migration, giving you access to genuinely current scholarly expertise. The year abroad extends your perspective into a different cultural and academic environment. A typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects an accessible but intellectually serious admissions standard. Graduates from English and sociology programmes are well placed for careers in education and teaching, social work, journalism and media, research, public policy, community development, communications, human resources, and the voluntary sector. Many continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, literary studies, sociology, or social policy.
