About this course
English literature is the study of how written language shapes, and is shaped by, the world. It asks you to read carefully and think critically, engaging with texts across centuries, genres and cultures, and developing the interpretive and analytical skills to understand not just what a text says but how it says it and why it matters. The discipline draws on history, philosophy, linguistics and cultural theory, and it challenges you to reflect on your own assumptions as well as those embedded in the works you study. At the University of Essex you will study this three-year full-time programme, and you will be challenged from the outset to engage seriously with how literature participates in the world, asking questions about power, representation, language and meaning that connect literary texts to broader social and political realities. Essex has a distinctive intellectual culture in the humanities, one that takes ideas seriously and encourages students to develop independent critical perspectives rather than simply absorbing received interpretations. You will read widely across historical periods and genres, developing your skills in close textual analysis, research and extended academic writing. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 120 UCAS points. English literature graduates are among the most versatile in the graduate market. The combination of analytical rigour, communication skills and cultural literacy the degree develops is valued across an exceptionally wide range of careers. Journalism, publishing, teaching, the civil service, law, public relations, marketing, arts administration, social research, consultancy and management are all well-established destinations. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study in literature, creative writing, media studies, education or law.
