BA English Literature
About this course
English literature is a discipline that takes seriously the full range of writing in the English language, from its earliest roots to the present, engaging with poetry, fiction, drama, and non-fiction in ways that develop both historical understanding and critical analytical skill. Literature records and shapes the societies that produce it, and studying it closely means developing your capacity to read with precision and subtlety, to trace the way meaning is constructed in language, and to engage with the aesthetic, cultural, and ethical dimensions of human creative expression. At Birmingham City University, this part-time programme is designed to accommodate students who need to balance study with work or other commitments, without sacrificing the intellectual ambition and academic depth that the subject deserves. You will be guided through major works from ancient classics and Shakespeare through to Romantic poetry, Gothic fiction, Victorian novels, and contemporary writing. The curriculum offers both breadth and depth, with survey modules that give you the historical sweep of literary change and thematic modules that dive into how authors handle questions of environment, gender, sexuality, and race. The programme embraces multiple critical perspectives, developing your ability to form and express your own well-informed views on the texts you encounter. You will develop close reading skills, the ability to construct extended and well-supported arguments about literary texts, and the written communication capabilities that engaged literary study demands. Graduates pursue careers in publishing, journalism, education, arts administration, the cultural sector, communications, and the civil service, among many others. The close reading, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that English literature develops are genuinely transferable and widely valued. Postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, publishing, or cultural studies is a natural continuation.
