BA English Language with Media Communication
About this course
English language with media communication is a degree that examines language and media as the two most fundamental systems through which meaning is made and shared in contemporary society. English language study investigates the structure and use of the English language itself, including its grammar, phonology, pragmatics, social variation, and historical development, developing your ability to analyse language scientifically and to understand how it works as a human tool. Media communication examines how content is produced, distributed, and received through broadcast, print, digital, and social platforms, and what that means for how information shapes public understanding. At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time programme explores the structure and use of the English language as well as how media is used to communicate, from the perspectives of both businesses and politicians and in everyday society, as the course describes. You will develop your linguistic analytical skills alongside your understanding of media industries, media forms, and the social and political dimensions of communication. Essex's research strengths in linguistics and the social sciences enrich the intellectual environment in which the degree is taught. Graduates from English language with media communication go on to work in journalism, broadcasting, content creation, digital marketing, public relations, corporate communications, teaching, and any professional role that benefits from a rigorous understanding of how language and media work. The combination of scientific linguistic knowledge and media understanding is distinctive and particularly well suited to roles in media analysis, communications strategy, editorial work, and language services. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in linguistics, media studies, journalism, or English language teaching, developing specialist expertise for academic or professional careers.
