About this course

English language and literature is a degree that studies both how the language works, its structure, history, and use in the world, and the literary tradition it has produced, from Chaucer and Shakespeare through the Romantics and Victorians to contemporary writing. Linguistics provides the analytical tools to examine language as a system: how sounds combine into words, how words form sentences, how meaning is made and shared, and how language varies across communities and contexts. Literary study develops the ability to read closely, to understand how texts are constructed, and to engage with the cultural and historical forces that shape writing. The University of Edinburgh's four-year full-time degree in English language and literature includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country. Edinburgh has excellent research strengths in both linguistics and English literature, and the programme benefits from a rich intellectual environment and from the literary and cultural heritage of Scotland, a country with its own distinctive literary tradition from Robert Burns and Walter Scott to Muriel Spark and contemporary writing in English and Scots. You will study the history of the English language, phonetics and phonology, semantics and pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and literary history from medieval to modern, developing analytical skills in both disciplines that are mutually reinforcing. Graduates from English language and literature programmes go on to work in publishing, journalism, education, communications, public relations, the civil service, heritage, arts administration, and a wide range of roles where reading, writing, and analytical thinking are central. Many continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, literary studies, or education. The combination of linguistic precision and literary sensitivity the degree develops is valued across any profession that depends on the intelligent use of language.
