About this course

Language is the medium through which almost everything in human life is conducted, yet most of us rarely stop to examine how it actually works. English language and linguistics turns that everyday familiarity into a subject of rigorous inquiry, asking how language is structured, how it is learned, how it varies across communities and contexts, how it changes over time, and how it is used to construct meaning, identity, and social relations. It is a discipline that combines the precision of science with the interpretive richness of the humanities, and it trains you to analyse one of the most complex systems human beings have ever produced. At the University of York you will engage with core areas of linguistic inquiry including phonetics and phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics, developing both theoretical frameworks and practical analytical tools. You will work with real linguistic data, applying theory to tackle genuine problems in language description and analysis. The programme encourages you to follow your own academic interests as they develop, building a deep understanding of how language works. The three-year degree includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as a work placement, giving you the chance to apply your skills in professional contexts and to experience linguistic diversity at first hand. Graduates in English language and linguistics are highly adaptable and move into a wide variety of careers. Teaching English as a foreign or second language is a common path, both in the UK and abroad. Roles in speech and language therapy, publishing, journalism, copywriting, human-computer interaction, and natural language processing are all open to graduates with this background. The research skills and analytical habits the degree develops are also valued in the civil service, communications, and a range of other professional settings. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, or language technology.
