About this course

English and law is a combination that takes the intellectual skills developed through literary study and applies them in dialogue with the analytical rigour of legal education. English trains you to read closely, to understand how language constructs meaning, and to engage with texts from a wide range of cultural and historical contexts, developing written and verbal communication abilities and the capacity for broad, creative thinking. Law sharpens those skills further, adding the discipline of legal reasoning, the interpretation of statutes and cases, and the ability to construct arguments that meet precise standards of logic and evidence. At Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic and cultural environment and engage with the literature and legal systems of another country. Strathclyde's law school is a leading provider of legal education in Scotland, and the combination with English brings together two departments with distinctive strengths. You will study Scots law, with its distinctive civil law elements, alongside a range of English literature from different periods and traditions. The programme develops your capacity to think across disciplines, to read complex texts with care and to communicate your analysis with clarity. Graduates of English and law programmes are well placed for careers that require both precise analytical thinking and strong communication skills. Legal practice, solicitor and advocate training, the civil service, journalism, publishing, education, public affairs and policy are all common destinations. The combination of literary and legal training is particularly relevant in areas such as media law, human rights, policy advocacy and legal communications. Further study in law or English is a natural option.
