MA English and European Languages
About this course
English literature and European languages is a combination that takes seriously the idea that literature belongs to a wider world than any single national tradition. The history of English writing is inseparable from European influence, translation, and exchange, and reading across languages makes you a more alert and perceptive reader within any single tradition. Conversely, studying a modern European language well requires the same skills of close reading, contextual understanding, and interpretive care that literary study in English develops. At Dundee you will study French and Spanish alongside English literature, exploring the history of writing in English from the medieval period to the present while developing your proficiency and cultural understanding in two major European languages. Literary study trains you to read carefully and think about how form, language, and context shape meaning. Language study develops communicative skills, cultural knowledge, and the cognitive flexibility that comes from navigating between different linguistic systems. The four-year programme includes a year abroad, which is an essential element of language degrees, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a French or Spanish-speaking environment and make the step from classroom proficiency to genuine cultural confidence. Graduates of this combination are well placed for careers in teaching, translation, publishing, journalism, international business, the civil service, cultural organisations, and communications. High-level language skills combined with literary analytical ability are genuinely valued by employers who need people who can write well, think critically, and engage effectively across cultural boundaries. Many students continue to postgraduate study in literature, linguistics, translation, or European studies.
