MEng Engineering Mathematics
About this course
Engineering mathematics is an unusual degree in that it is neither purely mathematics nor purely engineering, but a discipline that develops the mathematical and computational tools that engineering depends on and applies them to real engineering and data modelling problems. The field encompasses mathematical analysis, computational methods, data modelling, and the quantitative techniques that enable engineers and scientists to design, simulate, and optimise complex systems. As engineering has become more reliant on computational modelling and data analysis, graduates who combine deep mathematical understanding with practical engineering orientation have become increasingly sought after. The four-year full-time Engineering Mathematics programme at the University of Bristol provides a background in mathematical analysis, computing, and general engineering within the overall context of mathematical and data modelling. The first two years build the foundations in these areas, giving you experience in practical problem-solving and teamwork as well as an introduction to professional practice, which together form the basis for the deeper and more specialised work of the later years. The programme develops your ability to use sophisticated mathematical and computational tools to model, analyse, and solve engineering problems, and Bristol's research environment means you will be taught by academics working at the frontier of the field. With a typical entry tariff of 184 points, the programme is demanding and requires strong mathematical ability. Graduates are well placed for careers in engineering consultancy, data science, quantitative finance, technology, defence, aerospace, and any sector where the ability to model and solve complex quantitative problems is valued. Many also pursue postgraduate study in engineering, applied mathematics, or computational science.
