BEng Engineering Academy
About this course
The Engineering Academy at the University of Strathclyde is a pioneering alternative route into university and a career in engineering. Rather than the standard A-level or Higher entry route, the Academy offers a two-year, full-time programme that begins with an enhanced HNC in the first year, providing a thorough practical and technical grounding, followed by direct transfer into the second year of one of Strathclyde's engineering degrees. This means you achieve a full engineering degree qualification while following a distinctive pathway that combines vocational rigour with academic progression. The first year is designed to give you the same quality of engineering foundation that Strathclyde's degree programmes build on, with particular attention to the practical and applied dimensions of engineering alongside the underlying mathematics and science. You will develop technical skills and professional habits of mind that position you well for the transition into the degree, which you complete as a full Strathclyde student. The range of engineering disciplines you can transfer into is broad, reflecting the university's strength across electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, and other engineering fields. This pathway is well suited to students who have a clear interest in engineering and want to enter the profession through a practical and supported route that does not depend solely on traditional academic qualifications. The full engineering degree you ultimately achieve opens the same range of careers as any other Strathclyde engineering graduate: roles in energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, technology, defence, and the many other sectors that depend on engineering expertise. Many graduates progress towards chartered engineer status, and the combination of HNC training and degree-level education gives you a distinctive and credible professional profile. The Engineering Academy reflects Strathclyde's broader commitment to widening access to engineering education and the profession.
