BEng Energy Engineering
About this course
Energy engineering is a discipline that addresses one of the defining challenges of our time. The global energy crisis is at the forefront of many people's minds, and climate change is accelerating and defining our race towards a net zero society. Energy engineers design, develop, and optimise the systems that generate, store, transmit, and use energy, working across renewable and conventional energy technologies, grid infrastructure, energy efficiency in buildings and industry, and the modelling of complex energy systems. At Loughborough University, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of energy systems from their thermodynamic and electrical foundations through to the specific technologies and policy contexts of the energy transition. You will study heat transfer, fluid mechanics, power generation, electrical systems, control engineering, and renewable energy technologies, developing both the quantitative rigour and the practical engineering skills that the discipline demands. The programme prepares you to contribute to the design and operation of the energy systems that will be needed to reach net zero, whether in offshore wind, solar power, smart grids, nuclear, energy storage, or building energy performance. Entry typically requires around 152 UCAS tariff points. Energy engineering graduates work in energy companies, utilities, consultancies, government agencies, grid operators, and the growing renewable energy industry. The combination of engineering fundamentals with energy-specific knowledge is increasingly in demand as every sector of the economy works to reduce its carbon footprint. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in energy engineering, sustainable energy, or related fields, or pursue Chartered Engineer status.
