MEng Electronic Engineering with Computer Systems
About this course
Electronic engineering with computer systems is a discipline that sits at the heart of the modern technological world. Electronic engineers design and build the hardware that everything else depends on, from the integrated circuits in smartphones and computers to the sensor networks and power electronics that underpin industry, transport, and communications infrastructure. Computer systems engineering connects that hardware layer to the software and systems that exploit it, encompassing embedded systems, computer architecture, digital signal processing, and the design of complex systems that combine hardware and software in ways that push the boundaries of what is computationally possible. At Southampton this four-year full-time programme draws on a department that has pioneered major advances in electronics and microelectronics over several decades. You will explore the main components of integrated circuits, digital and analogue electronics, computer architecture, embedded systems, and high-performance computing, developing both theoretical understanding and practical design skills. The programme is oriented towards the full breadth of the electronics industry, from semiconductor design and communications hardware to the control systems embedded in vehicles, medical devices, and industrial equipment. The combination of electronic engineering and computer systems is particularly relevant to the rapidly growing areas of the Internet of Things, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence hardware, and the design of energy-efficient processors, all of which depend on graduates who understand both the hardware and the systems levels. Graduates move into careers in semiconductor design, communications systems, embedded systems engineering, defence electronics, the automotive and aerospace industries, and technology consultancy. Many go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research, and some work towards chartered engineer status through professional institutions. Southampton's research reputation in electronics provides a strong alumni network and research connection.
