About this course
Electronic engineering is the discipline behind the devices and systems that define contemporary life. Mobile phones, computers, medical imaging equipment, satellite communications, smart transportation systems, renewable energy converters, and the integrated circuits inside almost every manufactured product are all the work of electronic engineers. The field combines a deep understanding of the physics of semiconductors and electromagnetism with the design skills to create real systems that work reliably in the world. This three-year full-time degree at Royal Holloway, University of London includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and embedded work placement experience, making it one of the more structurally rich electronic engineering programmes available. You will build a rigorous grounding in the mathematical and physical principles that underlie electronic systems, learning to analyse circuits, design digital and analogue systems, programme embedded processors, and apply your knowledge to problems in areas such as signal processing, communications, and power electronics. The sandwich year places you in an industrial or research environment, giving you twelve months of professional experience in which to develop engineering practice, professional judgment, and industry contacts. The year abroad extends your formation further, exposing you to different engineering cultures and research environments. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points reflects an accessible but technically demanding admissions standard. Graduates from electronic engineering programmes are among the most employable science and technology graduates in the country, with careers spanning consumer electronics, defence and aerospace, telecommunications, the energy sector, automotive engineering, medical devices, robotics, and financial technology. Many pursue Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status through the IET, and others continue to master's or doctoral research in specialist areas of electronic engineering or related fields.
