About this course

Electrical and mechanical engineering is a combination that reflects the reality of how modern engineering systems work. Very few significant engineering projects are purely mechanical or purely electrical: the most sophisticated and valuable products and infrastructure, from electric vehicles and wind turbines to medical devices and industrial robotics, integrate mechanical design with electrical, electronic, and software systems in ways that require engineers who can work across the boundary. This combination of disciplines is at the heart of contemporary engineering innovation and is likely to become more important as systems become increasingly complex and interconnected. At the University of Strathclyde, one of Scotland's leading engineering institutions, this five-year MEng programme develops your skills across both mechanical and electrical engineering, covering mechanical design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, electrical circuits, power systems, electronics, control engineering, and computing. The international study element of the degree gives you the opportunity to spend time studying in another country, developing a broader professional and personal perspective alongside your technical formation. The typical entry tariff is 232 UCAS points, and the programme is designed to produce engineers who meet the requirements for chartered membership of professional bodies such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Graduates of combined electrical and mechanical engineering programmes are in demand across the full range of engineering industries. Energy generation and distribution, aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, defence, robotics, and building services are all sectors that value engineers with integrated electrical and mechanical knowledge. The MEng qualification provides a strong foundation for chartered engineer registration. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate research in areas where the two disciplines converge, such as mechatronics, power electronics, or control systems.
