BA Education (Work Based)
About this course
Education as a work-based degree is a programme that connects academic study of how learning works with practical engagement in real educational settings. It recognises that education is not only what happens in schools and universities but a pervasive human activity that takes place in workplaces, community organisations, healthcare settings, and informal contexts of every kind. Understanding how people learn, what barriers they face, and what support enables them to develop is relevant across a much wider range of careers than formal teaching alone suggests. At London South Bank University you will study this three-year full-time programme, deepening your understanding of how people learn through engagement with the cultural and historical dimensions of the UK education system and beyond. Placements in a wide variety of London settings are central to the degree, giving you direct experience of the diverse educational contexts the capital offers, from early years provision and secondary schools to community education, adult learning, and informal educational organisations. The practical dimension of the programme is integrated with your academic study, ensuring that theory and practice continuously inform each other. Graduates of work-based education degrees enter careers in teaching and educational support, community education, youth work, social care, training and development roles in business and the public sector, educational research, and policy. London's extraordinary diversity of educational settings provides a rich context for placements that open multiple career pathways. Many graduates continue to initial teacher training to qualify as school teachers, while others move into educational psychology, social work, or adult and further education. The combination of academic understanding and practical experience also makes graduates well suited to roles in educational publishing, curriculum development, and the growing field of educational technology.
