About this course

Education and the study of religion, theology and spirituality make an intellectually rich and practically grounded combination. Education as a discipline examines how learning happens, how educational systems are organised and what values and assumptions shape what counts as knowledge worth teaching. Religion, theology and spirituality bring complementary depth, exploring the beliefs, practices, texts and traditions through which billions of people across history and today have made sense of existence, morality and the sacred. Together they address some of the most important questions about how societies form, what they transmit and what they believe. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which gives you time to develop the academic foundations you need before progressing into the full degree. Liverpool itself provides an exceptional context for this combination, with its two iconic cathedrals, its history of diverse religious communities, and a long tradition in which faith and cultural identity have been deeply intertwined. You will explore the wisdom, practices and mysticism of major world traditions including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as contemporary spiritual identities that extend beyond traditional faiths. A placement year and year abroad are built into the programme, and work placement opportunities are integrated throughout, so that your professional formation and international experience develop alongside your academic studies. Graduates move into careers in education, teaching religion and ethics in secondary schools, or in primary and early years settings. The academic and reflective training the programme provides also prepares graduates for roles in chaplaincy, interfaith dialogue, community development, social work and the charitable sector. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, education or philosophy, and some move into academic research, journalism or policy roles where understanding of religion and its social role is directly valued.
