BA Education and Religion Theology & Spirituality
About this course
Education and Religion, Theology and Spirituality is a combination that explores two of the most fundamental concerns of human societies: how knowledge, values, and ways of living are passed on from one generation to the next, and how human beings seek meaning, transcendence, and community through faith and spiritual practice. Education studies examines the systems, philosophies, and relationships through which learning happens, both inside and outside formal institutions. Religion, Theology and Spirituality engages with the wisdom, practices, and traditions of major world faiths alongside contemporary spiritual identities that go beyond established religious categories. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year, full-time degree draws on a city that is itself a remarkable context for this kind of study: home to two iconic cathedrals, the oldest mosque in England, and a long history shaped by faith, migration, and cultural diversity. You will explore the traditions of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism alongside the contemporary spiritual landscape, asking how religious belief and practice interact with education, ethics, and public life. The degree includes a sandwich year and the option of a year abroad, as well as work placements, giving you the chance to situate your academic study in real professional and international contexts. Graduates of this combined degree are well placed for careers in education, including teaching, school chaplaincy, religious education, and pastoral care, as well as in community development, social work, interfaith dialogue, the charity sector, and journalism. The skills in critical thinking, cultural understanding, and ethical reasoning that you develop are valued across many professional contexts. Postgraduate study in education, religious studies, theology, or social policy provides routes to further specialisation or professional qualification.
