About this course

Education and English literature is a pairing that recognises a fundamental connection between two disciplines concerned with how we understand, communicate, and transmit human experience. Education studies examines the personal, social, cultural, and political forces that shape learning, asking what education is for, how it varies across contexts and cultures, how it can empower and how it can constrain. English literature develops the close reading, interpretive, and analytical skills needed to engage with the texts through which human experience is most powerfully expressed. Together they produce graduates who are deeply equipped for educational contexts and for any career where understanding how people learn and why stories matter is central. At Liverpool Hope this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional preparation, along with a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement. The combination of international exposure and professional experience alongside your academic study enriches both your literary and educational understanding. You will explore the history and theory of education, its sociology and politics, and the comparative dimensions of educational practice around the world, alongside a broad literary education spanning multiple periods, genres, and critical approaches. Both disciplines develop your writing, research, and analytical capabilities. Graduates of education and English literature are particularly well placed for teaching and education careers, where the ability to bring literary sensitivity and educational understanding together is genuinely distinctive. Initial teacher training in English is a natural next step for many graduates. Others move into educational publishing, curriculum development, community arts and learning, literacy and adult education, youth work, and cultural organisations. The skills the degree develops, particularly in communication, analysis, and critical thinking, are also valued in journalism, public relations, policy, and the civil service.
