About this course
Economics and Spanish is a combination that brings together rigorous analytical thinking and a major world language, producing graduates who are equipped both to understand how economies work and to operate effectively in the Spanish-speaking world. Economics provides a formal framework for analysing markets, prices, behaviour, and the effects of policy, drawing on mathematics, statistics, and theoretical models to generate insights that are applicable across a wide range of professional contexts. Spanish, spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Europe and Latin America, adds a significant dimension of international reach and cultural understanding. At Dundee, this four-year programme develops your economic knowledge and your Spanish linguistic and cultural competence in parallel. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the quantitative methods that underpin economic analysis, building the capacity to think rigorously about markets, institutions, and policy. The Spanish strand takes you to a high level of linguistic proficiency and engages with the literature, culture, and contemporary affairs of the Hispanic world. The MA option at Dundee offers additional flexibility across arts and social science subjects, allowing you to develop a broader intellectual context for your economics and Spanish studies. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you time in a Spanish-speaking country that is both linguistically essential and personally formative. Graduates are well placed for careers that combine analytical and international dimensions, including roles in financial services, international development, economic research, consulting, trade and international business, government, and diplomacy. The combination of economic training and Spanish language fluency is particularly valuable in contexts involving Latin American or European affairs.
