About this course

Economics with Finance brings together two disciplines that are deeply interconnected in practice. Economics provides the theoretical and empirical tools to understand how markets, institutions, and policies shape resource allocation, growth, and distribution at every scale from the household to the global economy. Finance examines how capital is raised, allocated, and priced within those economic systems, and how individuals and organisations manage risk and return over time. Studying them together gives you a more complete picture than either alone, and it prepares you for a wide range of careers where both perspectives are valued. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time degree offers rigorous training in both, within one of the UK's most distinguished economics departments. You will study the full core of economics, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and applied economic analysis, alongside the foundational principles of corporate finance, investment theory, asset pricing, and financial markets. As the degree progresses, you will move into more advanced topics that reflect the intersection of the two disciplines, such as financial economics, monetary economics, and the economics of financial regulation. Quantitative methods and data skills receive sustained attention throughout. A year abroad is built into the programme, offering the opportunity to study at a partner institution and to gain international perspective on the economic and financial systems you are studying. The typical entry tariff is 184 UCAS points. Graduates pursue careers in investment banking, asset management, economic consulting, central banking, financial regulation, corporate finance, and public policy. Edinburgh's reputation in economics and finance, combined with the year abroad experience, opens doors across international financial centres and organisations. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in economics, finance, or related quantitative disciplines, building specialist expertise on top of the rigorous analytical foundations the degree provides.
