BSc Economics with a Year Abroad
About this course
Economics is the study of how societies allocate scarce resources, how markets function, how governments intervene and what the consequences of all these choices are for growth, employment, distribution and welfare. It ranges from the behaviour of individual consumers and firms to the dynamics of national economies and global financial systems. A year abroad builds on this naturally, since spending time in a different economic environment, comparing policy approaches, observing different market structures and experiencing an economy from the inside sharpens your understanding in ways that classroom study cannot fully replicate. At the University of Kent, this four-year programme is built for students from a range of backgrounds, whether or not you have previously studied economics or mathematics. You will be supported, challenged and equipped with the quantitative and analytical tools the discipline requires, developing economic reasoning progressively. The curriculum covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and applied economics, with the opportunity to explore areas such as labour markets, development, public finance and international trade. The year abroad is embedded in the structure, allowing you to study at a partner institution in another country and bring back a genuinely international perspective. Quantitative skills, analytical thinking, clear communication and the ability to evaluate complex evidence are all developed through the degree. These capabilities are among the most broadly valued in the graduate jobs market. Graduates from economics programmes work across a remarkable range of fields, including financial services, management consultancy, government and public policy, central banking, international organisations, business analysis, research and journalism. The analytical rigour of the subject means that economics graduates are competitive across many sectors. Postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy or data science is a common route for those who want to deepen their expertise.
