BSc Economics / Business and Management
About this course
Economics and business and management are natural intellectual partners. Economics provides the theoretical frameworks and analytical tools for understanding how markets, firms, and whole economies function, while business and management focuses on the decisions, strategies, and processes through which organisations create value and navigate competitive and regulatory environments. Studying them together gives you a broader perspective than either alone, showing how macroeconomic forces shape the context in which business decisions are made and how the behaviour of firms in turn influences economic outcomes. At Aberystwyth this three-year full-time programme recognises that the business environment is constantly adapting. You will examine how economic events, changes in accounting practices, shifts in the regulatory and legal landscape, marketing decisions, and the development of business strategies interact and how they can determine whether an organisation succeeds or fails. You will build analytical skills for understanding markets and macroeconomic conditions alongside practical knowledge of how organisations are managed, financed, and positioned in competitive markets. The programme develops the ability to think clearly about complex situations where multiple forces are at work simultaneously, which is exactly what employers in business, finance, and the public sector value. Graduates of this joint programme find careers in business management, economic analysis, finance, consulting, marketing, and public policy. The combination of economic rigour and applied business knowledge is well suited to graduate programmes at firms seeking analytical thinkers who understand both the broader economic environment and the operational realities of organisations. Roles in commercial banking, corporate strategy, economic consultancy, the civil service, and international trade are among the natural destinations. Many graduates also choose to continue into postgraduate study, including MBAs, master's degrees in economics or management, or professional qualifications in finance and accountancy.
