MA Economics and German (4yrs)
About this course
Economics and German is a combination that provides both the analytical tools to understand how the global economy works and direct linguistic and cultural access to one of its most important players. Germany is Europe's largest economy and a key participant in global trade, finance, and governance, and the German language is spoken by more than 100 million people across central Europe. Combining economics with German gives you a competitive advantage in careers that span European and international organisations and business, while also developing two very different but complementary kinds of intellectual rigour. At Aberdeen this four-year full-time degree gives you a solid grounding in economic theory alongside genuine proficiency in German. You will study microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, financial economics, and applied economics, developing the quantitative and analytical skills that characterise professional economists. Your German studies run in parallel, building linguistic competence and cultural understanding through literature, film, and contemporary society. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, providing immersive language experience and direct engagement with German-speaking business and cultural life. The combination of economic knowledge and language ability is a fast track to careers in European and international contexts. Graduates go on to careers in international business, European institutions, economic consultancy, the civil service, banking, finance, journalism, and a wide range of roles in organisations with significant German-speaking operations or interests. The combination of economic rigour and German-language ability is particularly distinctive and valued by employers who operate across the European and global economy. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in economics, European studies, international relations, or business.
