BSc Economics and Finance with a Year Abroad
About this course
Economics and finance is a combination that addresses two deeply connected areas of analytical and professional knowledge. Economics provides the theoretical frameworks to understand how markets, firms, governments, and individuals make decisions in conditions of scarcity and uncertainty, from the microeconomic analysis of consumer and producer behaviour to the macroeconomic forces that drive growth, inflation, and unemployment. Finance extends this into the specific domain of financial markets, investment, risk management, and the pricing of financial assets, applying and extending economic reasoning to the world of money and capital. At the University of East Anglia, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, providing an extended period of international study alongside the main academic curriculum. You will cover core microeconomics and macroeconomics, econometrics, and the mathematics of financial markets, progressing to more advanced material in corporate finance, asset pricing, financial derivatives, and economic policy analysis as the degree develops. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country, encountering economics and finance in a different academic culture and regulatory environment, which is valuable preparation for careers in internationally connected financial and economic organisations. Graduates from economics and finance programmes are sought after in banking, investment management, financial analysis, economic consultancy, the civil service, central banking, and international organisations. The analytical and quantitative skills developed through this combination are applicable across a wide range of roles in both the public and private sectors. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in economics, finance, or financial mathematics, or professional qualifications such as the CFA, where the undergraduate foundation is a significant advantage.
