About this course
Economics and finance are two disciplines that examine the world through the lens of scarcity, incentives and the allocation of resources. Economics provides the theoretical and empirical framework for understanding how markets, households, firms and governments make decisions and how those decisions aggregate into the outcomes we observe in the economy. Finance focuses more directly on how money moves through the system, how assets are priced, how risks are managed and how businesses and individuals invest and borrow. Studied together at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, they give you a rigorous and highly employable combination of analytical skills. This three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a substantial advantage in terms of professional experience and international exposure before you graduate. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, financial markets, corporate finance, investment analysis, financial modelling and the policy environment in which economic and financial decisions take place. The programme develops both your quantitative skills and your ability to think about economic and financial questions in a conceptually sophisticated way. Graduates from economics and finance degrees are highly sought after. Banking, investment management, insurance, financial consulting, economic analysis and policy are among the most common career destinations, and the combination of economic and financial expertise is particularly valued in roles that require both market understanding and analytical precision. Many graduates join the graduate schemes of major financial institutions or consultancies, while others move into government, think tanks or international organisations. The placement experience built into this degree gives you a significant advantage in a competitive market, and postgraduate study in economics, finance or related fields is also a common pathway.
